Back-To-School Dental Tips

For adults and kids alike, prevention is key for outstanding oral health! Here’s some tips to keep your child’s oral health on the right track as they get back to their daily school routine.

  1. Encourage Teeth-Friendly Foods
  2. Overall, limit your child’s consumption of soda, candy, sticky snacks, and acidic foods. Creatively encourage more crunchy veggies, fresh whole fruits, and calcium-rich foods on a regular basis.

  3. Let Them Choose Their Own Dental Tools
  4. Kiddos get excited about choosing their own dental care items! Make a special trip to the store with your kids so they can choose their own toothbrush and floss. You never know how far a favorite color or cartoon character can go in making teeth brushing less of a battle.

  5. Make Oral Hygiene a Family Affair
  6. If your children are under the age of six, you should be brushing their teeth or at least helping to ensure their cute little teeth are properly cleaned and that they don’t swallow their toothpaste. If they’re a little older and still reluctant about daily oral hygiene, be enthusiastic about your own dental care and brush your teeth in front of them. They may feel encouraged to follow your example and be more interested in their own dental hygiene. Remember, everyone should be brushing for two minutes twice a day and flossing once a day to keep a happy mouth!

  7. Turn Up The Music
  8. Music can put almost anyone in a better mood. Why not let them play one of their favorite songs while brushing their teeth? Maybe if you’re a super clever parent, you’ll conveniently find a tune that’s right around two minutes long so they know when to begin brushing and when they can stop.

  9. Keep Up with Their Biannual Dental Checkups
  10. Schedule appointments for your children to visit Arizona Biltmore Dentistry every six months either before school (we open at 6:00 am Monday through Friday, and 7:00 am on Friday!), during a lunch/free period, or after school. However, after a long day of school, much like an adult after a long day of work, kids probably aren’t itching to sit in a dental office or cooperate as someone invades their personal space. But whenever their checkup fits within your family’s schedule, keep in mind that a good night’s rest and a healthy meal prior to the visit always helps!

About Preventive Oral Care

Encouraging your kids to brush and floss every day helps to prevent cavities, gum disease, and other health issues. Spending a few minutes on their teeth when they wake up and before going to bed can make all the difference in the long run. Although sealants can aid in preventing cavities in molars, they don’t usually cover the entire tooth and cavities can still occur if they don’t brush and floss regularly. And even though most cavities can be treated with a filling, their best bet is caring for their mouth before problems form! This includes daily at-home oral care and routine examinations.
